and my new telephone number for italy is +39 340 623 0992

Athen to Genoa Pt 1

so far so good. we left athens in something of a hurry on saturday afternoon and arrived at our first stop on italys west coast at dark last night. Apparently there is some bad weather on the way and the captain has chosen to hide in a harbour for a day or two. Not my preferred sense of adventure but he is the boss after all. so for now, i am sitting in a harbour in a very small and quiet town called Viba Marina. But let me tell you more about the amazing journey here.

Sailing is tough, especially when the skipper chooses to motor or the wind isnt right for sailing. we have been chugging away for to days now, covering a monsterous 200 miles in 24 hours. we chug non stop, working shifts to keep watch for other ships and to make sure we maintain our course. 5 hours on and 5 off to sleep, working in pairs so you really do nothing but work and sleep.

we left athens in something of a hurry , keen to get underway. Crossing the bay from athens to our little shortcut through the greek mainland was pretty uneventful, apart from the hundreds of ships and tankers that we shared our water with. We did have a cunning plan though, to cut through a man made canal that meant we didnt have to go south first to clear the bottom of greece.

The canal costs 1000 euros to use and is less than three miles long. Our boat fits comfortably through, ok, with only four metres each side, it was comfortable for me, but you can see the tension on the skippers face on the photos i have added.

it was of course one of those beautiful moments everyone should experience. The canal has road bridges at each end to allow traffic across too, but these are at sea level. when a ship approaches, the bridge is sank into the ocean, down to 8 metres deep. The ship passes and the bridge is re-floated until next time. once inside the canal, the silence is mind blowing. the chug of the boat, the gentle lap of the waves agains the wall, the crystal blue water and the cliffs that surround you, some 55 metres or approx 170 feet. it needs to be high too, our mast height is 42 metres, we have 10 metres clearance on the lowest bridge.

when you get through and out the other side, the bridge lowers again and we entered the corinth sea, our last blast in greek waters.

with land in sight at all times, we head for our next landmark, the rio crossing. we passed this at night, the bridge was afire with neon blue and yellow lights as we passed through the centre and highest arch. The photos just don’t do the sight justice.

shortly after passing the bridge, we hit the open seas of the Ionian. Nothing in sight for what seemed like an age. Even taking the radar out to 64 miles, showed no land and no other ships. totally alone, just the ghostly whispers of other bored mariners on the VHF, like something from a horror movie, these other mariners get bored and speak in spooky ghost like voices, that had me checking over my shoulder at regular intervals. The drag was long.

then, i had my first ever Italian sunrise!

Soon we would see the coast of italy and the island of sicily, with Mount Etna towering above the clouds, still capped with snow! In the distance i spied another vessel, a curious looking thing. Turns out, it was hunting sword fish. Two men at the top of the mast on look out, and a man with a harpoon at the front of the boat who would then run out along a plank that was at least twice the lenght of the boat. the photos are something to look at. but the best was still yet to come.

Dolphins.

I love these curious little creatures. I spied a small group swimming towards us and grabbed my camera and ran to the bow. As they met us head on, i can see them in the water, turning broadside and then heading in the same direction as us, they pick up speed to match the boat, skip and dive across the surface before submerging and crossing under the boat and carrying on with their own journey. I got one super cool picture of three dolphins under the bow together and my reflection on the surface just infront of them. enlarge this picture to capture all of its magic.

that woke me up for the rest of the day. We chugged for the rest of the day until we reached port at dusk. Moored the boat, hooked up the shore power and finally settled in for dinner. I hope the next leg will be as intruiging. we wil be here until at least tomorrow afternoon, depending on the weather and nothing more. Next stop Genoa.

I have also bought an italian card for my phone but it will take them at least two days to get it live. i will let you have the number as soon as i know it. only in italy can you buy a sim card but not know the phone number you have bought.

and lastly – the italian women are a vast, vast improvement on the greek, fat hairy chumps i have gotten used to viewing

all hands on deck!!!

So, it appears we are going to leave this afternoon.

5 days solid to Genoa, no extra crew as yet and the promise of some ‘bad’ weather as we get close. Now , bad weather, is something i am looking forward to.

so far on my travels, the most turbulent waters i have encountered are that of a wake from a passing ferry. at this point, i would always make my way to the bow sprit and get right on the end so that the boat movement is maximised, but it just aint the same.

a metre of movement on the bow sprit just aint the same as 4 or 5 metres midships – bring it on.

will be away now until around thursday lunchtime i guess.

until then, keep warm and dry

choose life

i am blessed, thats for sure. no, i am not talking about the size of my manhood, although that is a blessing too. i am talking about my life and the way it keeps constantly evolving.

think about it for a moment.

three weeks ago i was just leaving palma. in the last three weeks, i have seen more of the greek islands than i ever imagined i would. infact, i have seen more greek islands than i ever imagined there were. I am now nestled in athens for a couple of days.

I have a chef that feeds me two gourmet meals a day, a stewie that washes and irons my clothes, a boss that pays me to be on the boat and in two days time, i am leaving for Genoa in Italy. When i get there, i will have a hotel all paid for while i fix the boat.  when i have fixed the boat, i will then sail on to many italian islands including corsica, sardinia and capri to name but a few,  before heading to the south of france for a few stops and finally ending the season back in italy , in san remo. if i stay on, we will then head to monaco for the boat show. AFter which time, my flights will be paid for me to go home, from wherever we finish to whichever destination i choose to call home.

On top of that, on my travels, i am constantly bumping in to new and interesting people from all around the world. In rhodes, i met the friendliest shopkeeper you would ever imagine and i have just left a BBQ that other crew members from other boats here in the harbour were having. They were all from the philipines and all, unbelievably friendly, happy to laugh and joke with me while they pour whiskey and coke faster than i can drink it.

if you believe all that you see on tv, you might think that the world is a bad place, well, i just dont dig that point of view. the world is just one big adventure waiting for you to get your shoes on and go out there looking for it.

choose life!!!

Athens , all in one piece!

Made it an hour ago, all is well.

It has been a pretty sweet week or so, we have cruised the aegean and stopped off at plenty of small islands. the sort of islands that do not have cars on them or airports. the only way in and out is by boat, ferry, hydrofoil or the manic little water taxis that fly from island to island all day and all night long. The local taxis on the island are a donkey and cart – i kid you not !

the seas are always the deepest blue and crystal clear. I havent seen dolphins for a few days now but on the way into port we did cross paths with a huge moon fish, normally they would be white, but this one was black. a monster to say the least as it effortlessly crossed our bow with its top fin out of the water. if you didnt know better, you would say it was a shark!

Today, four of our guests have left us, leaving us with just the owner and his girlfriend. A lady from south america gave me a 100$ tip and a canadian dude gave me a 100 euro tip, i never expected that!

We have decided not to pull the boat out of the water here in athens, but instead, we are leaving for Genoa in Italy on sunday. That will take us around 5 days of non stop sailing and i doubt i will have internet connection again before next weekend. Of course, when i arrive there will be yet another contact number for me, one for italy, where i will be for the next three months. I always wanted to go to italy so maybe , maybe i may stay on! you never know, a hot fiery red headed latina babe could keep me away from the life i am enjoying – but then again, i doubt it very much, somebody please slap me for being such a twat !!!!!!

we are hoping to find a couple of extra crew for the trip, to run with just four people for five days solid is going to be very hard on us. I doubt they will find anyone though, the money on offer is not brilliant and i figure anyone that is any good will already have work for the summer.

so i have a day of rest maybe tomorrow,we are hooke dup to shore power now, so no generators to keep an eye on, i can take it relatively easy. If the boss leaves us today or tomorrow, we can have a lie in on sunday before leaving for italy.

I am looking forward to getting home to portugal and surfing with my old buddies, if they are still there. i havent been home now since new year and could stay with this boat if i wanted until the end of september. I am still waiting to hear from nariida about a role with them. if that happens, i will be in Mallorca or maybe the azores before november!

I have had a busy three weeks since leaving mallorca, i am tired and need to sleep and also missing being at home! it will all coem in good time i know, but i miss portugal all the same.

Authors footnote. i love these little things, nobody ever reads them, except, max, verity and the doctor! i can have a bit of a jab at whatever i like here and mostly it goes unnoticed. so before i sign off today, i would like to say, the women in greece are all fat and hairy! portuguese and mallorcan chicks rock – stick around for my take on italian women in about a weeks time – until then – fuck off !!

water inside the boat – not a good thing!!!

Ah the pleasures of being an engineer!

we set sail on friday afternoon for an overnight anchor in rhodes, before planning to return to Rodos on saturday afternoon to collect two more guests.

as we tried to dock on saturday, we had a failure on our stern thruster. now, before you run off to find your anne summers catalogue to see what a stern thruster is, let me tell you. it is like a big underwater fan that drops out of the bottom of the boat and pushes the boat sideways, very important piece of kit when parking in tight spots.

while i was trying to rectify the fault, i noticed that we were taking on a lot of water through the thruster housing, i could slow the leak but not stop it, and to slow it meant that we could not use the thruster so, after a half hour thinking time, the captain suggested that we now head to athens ship yard, as they have a crane big enough to lift us out.

On saturday evening at 7pm, we pushed off from Rodos old town and would cruise non stop until midnight the following night, pumping the bilge as we went.

Of course technology would fail me again half way across the aegean. Mid afternoon on sunday, just when i was feeling realy tired , i spotted a family of dolphins heading straight towards us. The must have been around 20 of them and as they reached our bow, they turned and swam with us.

now this is where technology lets me down. I grabbed my camera to film these beauties, and within 5 seconds it was flat. OK so i had grabbed a couple of seconds of dolphins under my feet in glorious blue waters but then, i tried to transfer from my camera to laptop or ipod and no joy! so even though i got some footage, you can’t see it.

I have added a couple of shots though, 1 of a dolphin at my feet, the other is from around 3am on sunday morning while i was alone on deck , on watch.

enjoy them

i may now be stuck in athens for the best part of a month while we fix the thrusters and a few other items i would like to do while i am out of the water. tune in again later this week to see if i make it all the way without sinking the boat

can life always be so good?

here i am, 9 at night on deck to pick up a wireless signal. Natalie Imbruglia is singing in my  ears, the wind is blowing in my hair, Rhodes old town has its lights ablaze and i get to talk to lineke at the same time.

sometimes life can be so sweet

it finally begins

this afternoon ,or owner arrived with some guests.

thankfully, we are now planning to hit sail tomorrow morning instead of waiting here until saturday for two more guests to join. when you are completely minted like most big boat owners, you can change your mind as often as you like.

so this will be me for the next three months at least, roaming the med, in search of adventure.

i did solve the problem of the missing flip flop though. yesterday while in the wheel house using my computor, i saw a very friendly stray dog walking along with a flip flop. i went out and stopped him and recovered the flip flop. he mentioned to me that he had a compulsive disorder for this sort of thing and admitted stealing my other flip flop – all of this took part in my best language of greek dog

authors footnote – the author would like to issue a running fuck slap to another person who pissed him off today. life is just too short to let these mindless wankers bother us – beat them back into the gutter where they belong

valuable lessons in life

first off

yesterday i logged onto the itunes store to download some music. i found the album i wanted, itunes wanted £11.95 to download it. i checked out www.play.com and got the same album, cd and all , delivered to my door for £5.95

The last lesson today – never charter a boat to germans! they may have produced one of the greatest formula 1 drivers of all times, but when it comes to boats, they are just shite. Yesterday, we had a german skippered yacht caught on our anchor chain, securely locked on by its keel, rudder and prop shaft – right now, i am watching a german skippered catarmaran stuck across the bow of not one, but two yachts!

and still they come

one week later

ok, fair to say, yes, i am still in Rhodes but at least i have survived my first week in one piece. The owner arrives in 5 days time and we finally get to sail, all the way to turkey!

My week has been a bit full on really. I have had a crash course in Jongert engineering, thankfully , they are also famous for the way they create engineers manuals to explain layout and operation of everything they instal……you gotta love the dutch!

I have added a few photos from the boat. It has the best equiped kitchen {galley} that i have ever been in, a massive 22 litre V12 twin turbo diesel engine, two generators, a water maker and lots of hydraulic stuff to boot. I have spent the last two days making a full inventory of all the parts i have in stock and most importantly, which section of the boat they are stored in. i even managed to re-fuel the beast, the tanks hold a whopping 14,000 litres!!! Imagine picking up the tab for that one!

I also added a picture of my toilet. take a look at the size of the hole the poo has to get through!!!! and then think, who’s job is that if they block? and there are 6 of them on the boat! now imagine the size of the skiddies i can leave in the bowl !!!! excellent

I have made all of the engine logs i need to last, and also a data analysis sheet to look at the historical data they produce! the last engineer seemed to prefer not recording anything he did, assuming he did anything.

This afternoon we had a lttle fun without leaving the port. some german tourists on a rental boat tried to moor with their main sail half up. The wind caught them as you would expect and blew them across our bow so that our anchor chain was between their rudder and keel, rubbing on the prop shaft while they sat at right angles across our bow.

in the end, the mate from our boat had to get on theirs and take control to get them in!

tomorrow i have some work to do, monday and tuesday will be full on, wednesday will be final checks befor ethe owner boards and then thursday turkey bound just for one night, then we head to Kos, and then Athens.

I had a walk around Rhodes old town today. an amazing place, looked unbelieveably medieval and relatively untouched, a shoppers paradise, fashion shops, shoe shops, gold and silver shops, al fresco restaurants, it really was something beautiful. if you ever come this way, i recommend a visit.

I almost forgot!!!! the chef on board is absolutely amazing. she cooks two full on meals a day, the sort of meal you would pay top dollar for ina restaurant! this morning she cooked banana muffins with cherries and almonds on top, amazing! i reckon i might be a few kilo’s heavier by the time i return. the smell of freshly baking bread just drives me nuts, but man, she is good at it!

enough for now, dont forget to take a look at the photos to the right
